South African government explore ways to streamline wind energy bidding process

Government body, the Department of Environmental Affairs, development group SANEDI, the Council for Scientific Research and world renowned University of Stellenbosch are set to share the latest developments surrounding South African wind energy in April.

With plans for Renewable Energy Development Zones (REDZ) being submitted for Cabinet approval in the first quarter of this year the REDZ are looking to transform and streamline the way South African wind projects are bid for and approved. The government body The Department of Environmental Affairs who are leading the proposal have announced a panel of leading scientists, academics and government officials to explain the key elements of this approaching regulation.

The discussion, being held at Wind Energy Summit South Africa, will debate how the REDZ plan to reduce risks for project developers by creating established zones in which the approval process for wind projects is more streamlined and certain incentives will be put in place for those wishing to develop in these areas.

Surprize Zwane, Director, Strategic Development Support, The Department of Environmental Affairs said of the meeting, “I’m really looking forward to sharing the latest insight into policy and developments that will drive this young and exciting industry forward. Wind Energy Summit South Africa is looking like one of the most important meetings for the wind community this year.”
